What would it be like if we got to see a day in the life of real-life friends Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogan and then the apocalypse happened? This Is The End answers that question. Written and directed by long time collaborators Rogan and Evan Goldberg (Pineapple Express, Superbad, Green Hornet) and based on the short film Jay & Seth Vs the Apocalypse, this flick is all that we’ve come to expect from these guys and it’s a whole lot of fun. Jay is staying in L.A. with Seth to relive some of the lost magic of the days before they were film stars which comprises mostly of videogames, drugs and bad food. Seth wants to go to a party at James Franco’s house and it’s here that the majority of the film takes place.
At the party we meet such celebrities as Emma Watson, Rihanna, Michael Cera, Jonah Hill and Craig Robinson and we quickly realise how much Jay dislikes this particular scene. Oh. And then the apocalypse happens and the remaining survivors barricade Franco’s house to stop whatever the hell it is out there from getting in. The next morning they find out they’re stuck in there with Danny McBride too who puts on his best asshole hat and pisses everyone off in the process. There are a lot of laughs to be had and some of the effects are really quite cool. If you’re having trouble trying to wrap your head around it, look at it as an unofficial sequel to Pineapple Express. That should help. Or it won’t. Look, this film probably won’t gain these guys any new fans but the loyal following they already have will lap it up. To be taken with your drug* of choice.
