MICF 2021 Revolutionary recommendations – Snake Oil

Let’s face it, 2020 was awful. For many Melburnians, the last-minute cancellation of Melbourne International Comedy Festival was the first sign of just how bad things would get.

It’s a new year now. Yay! And with that dumpster fire behind us, MICF rises like a phoenix once more. You heard right, live comedy is back in town—and this time around it’s more homegrown than ever!

The coming of a new festival season will always warm my little heart as I see collaborators both old and new with their very own festival shows.

Here is another Revolutionary Recommendation for 2021:

The Burton Brothers – Snake Oil

8 – 18 Apr

Do you suffer from an ache that ails you or a maddening malady? Do you feel like a chunk of rotting butcher’s meat that’s been ripped apart in the sweltering heat of the day by hungry dogs?

Then look no further than the miracle cure we have for you. Two brothers performing sketch comedy. It will make you laugh, make you cry, put a pep in your step and some fuel in your mule.

One half of the Burton Brothers, Tom (I have not met Josh, but have been assured that he is good people) turned up in two #QuestInnPodcast episodes back in 2018 as the egg-obsessed fox, Mickle Mantel. Both recording sessions were a breeze. Tom brought a great vibe to the studio and gave his character life in a way that was both unique and memorable.

Snake Oil is playing now.

Scandal! A Reflection on Essendon’s Doping Saga: The Musical?

25 Mar – 4 Apr

In 2013 Essendon Football Club was rocked by one of the biggest doping scandals in AFL history.

Scandal! A Reflection on Essendon’s Doping Saga: The Musical? is a (slightly) biased look at what it means to be a diehard fan when your heroes fall from grace. Featuring all original music and a live band.

Nominated for Best Cabaret Writing at the 2019 Annual Greenroom Awards and also received the Moosehead Award in 2020, Kit is a creative force worthy of your attention.

Kit appeared in the mysteriously-titled #QuestInnPodcast episode Balai the White as Mop LeBlanc in 2019.

Big Big Big – Catching Jack

25 Mar – 4 Apr

Three detectives and one rat will stop at nothing to take down Jack the Ripper. Separated in the darkness, they’ll need the help of new characters and old friends along the way.

Millie Holten is one-third of Big Big Big (with Ella Lawry and Madi Savage). This trio did not let lockdown get in the way of productivity. As well as preparing for this show Big Big Big released The Candyman, a thrilling comedy podcast series that investigates the harrowing events of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Millie appeared in three #QuestInnPodcast episodes as Dt. Susan Sarandon way back in 2018.

Catching Jack is playing now.

The original nine episodes released between August-September 2018 have been re-purposed and presented on Youtube as a complete package.

Teaser trailer

The vacuum of space is a cold and lonely place…

Forgotten and alone, your derelict ship drifts aimlessly in the darkness. Your only company, and last defence against the maddening silence, is the barely functioning radio receiver. Pressing your ear against the speaker, you listen closely and hope for help to drift your way…

Space Junk is a collection of sketches, stories and music brought to you by the folks behind The Quest Inn at the Centre of the Universe.

Initially set to be only four episodes long, the first half of this series leans heavily into building on lore from the Quest Inn podcast. The Furious Rodent Leader sketches were scripted and performed by Mog in a second session.

Episode 5: Banana Peel cover art.

Space Junk2 (episodes 5-9) comprises additional improvisations with Charlie Sturgeon alongside scripted material written and performed by Mog.

Episodes 1-4 written and performed by Tom Fahey, Indiana Kiely, Mog Thistlethwaite and Beau Windon.

Episodes 5-9 (Space Junk2) written and performed by Tom Fahey, Charlie Sturgeon, Mog Thistlethwaite and Beau Windon.
